Soweto Township Tour
This City of four million people is the largest township in Gauteng. Soweto (South western township) started as a settlement for people coming from the country districts to find work. It is considered by some to be a city in it's own right. Since Soweto was established with the formation of Klipspruit in 1906, it has grown to the sprawling vibrant place that it is today.
Soweto Township life
A visit offers not only historical interest but also an insight into township life. No matter what your interest, or where you come from, a visit will be a great surprise to you and a rewarding experience.
Get a close idea of the conditions and see both the ‘GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY”. See where the 1976 “Children’s Uprising” started. Visit Mr Nelson Mandela’s four roomed home and where South Africa’s famous Nobel Prize winners lived.
Visitors are amazed at the friendliness of the Soweto people. They are all surprised at how safe they feel and we often see them talking and joking with the local people during the trip. We stop at one of the shabeens for a beer or a full meal prepared by the family.
Another highlight of the soweto township day tour is a visit to a crèche in one of the squatter camps in Soweto. The little ones are a delightful and their singing is magical. Here too is a rehabilitation centre for youngsters of the area who have suffered from the effects of abuse in the early childhood. Donations of books, kids clothes and mielie meal (a staple diet of the African people) are always greatly appreciated, as they don’t get assistance from the government.
We also encourage people to send any cash donations to the NELSON MANDELA CHILDRENS FUND
Early Johannesburg developed from a tent camp to iron shanties, to low brick buildings and in doing so many slumyards were created, they were squalid and overcrowded, this is the start to the History of Soweto
